FRIED FISH EMERGENCY!!!!
st. Nicholas Ave at 145th St., New york, NY
Even the Police like to block bike lanes! It's FUN for all! Hey, I was hungry - so some biker died...
If the Police don't respect the law, why should anyone else?
Cop parks in bike lane
333 bleecker, New york, NY
He has a permit in the window, so bike lane does not exist. Note vehicle's proximity from curb. Ordinary mortals can be ticketed for such infractions.
Thanks NYPD!
5th Ave and East 20th st, New york, NY
I told the TEA agent to ticket this guy, but he said "I can't, it's a cop". I informed him that it was still illegal.
Setting the Mood
West 77th St. and Central park West, New york, NY
New York's finest having breakfast in the bike lane. Not surprising those guys from Jersey in the prior two posts felt comfortable parking there.
New York's Finest Bike Lane Abusers, part deux
St. Nicholas and 122nd St., New york, NY
There were about 7 NYPD cruisers and personal vehicles with permits on this section of St. Nicholas between 122nd and 123rd (near the 28th precinct house). This is the case EVERY day I ride by. Thanks for sending all the cyclists into traffic, NYPD.

Lunch Break
8th Avenue @ 37th St, New york, NY
An unmanned traffic scooter, parked directly behind a traffic cop in her car eating lunch.
Precinct Parking = Livery Parking
821 eighth ave, New york, NY
Since the NYPD frequently parks in this stretch of bike lane, this livery driver thought it would be ok if he did as well. Just as the NYPD didn't bother to park at the curb, he didn't bother either. Lack of respect and professionalism from law enforcement creates a domino effect. If the bike lane already has a truck or police car in it, the herd mentality kicks in. ("If it's ok for that guy to do it, I can too.")
Bike Lane = Precinct Parking
914 8th ave, New york, NY
When the NYPD is out on patrol, they ought to park wherever they need to. I have no problem with that; that's why we call them first responders and thank them for doing their dangerous work. But when the precinct uses the bike lane as its private parking lot, I have a problem with the uncivil servant mentality. This is a very popular parking spot for the precinct, and even the Google maps street view photo for this exact location shows one of their vans parked in the bike lane: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=821+8th+Ave,+New+York,+NY+10019,+USA&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title
School safety?
8th Street and Avenue C, New york, NY
Uhh... what? The driver of this vehicle had a free (big) spot across the street, but the chose to park in the bike lane while he went to use an ATM.
Busted!
First Avenue, at E. 75th Street, New york, NY
We called over this officer who directed the van to park next to the hydrant, as long as he was standing rather than parking. thanks NYPD!
taxi on 2nd ave
2nd ave and east 13th st, New york, NY
2nd Ave on weekend nights is full of illegally stopped, standing and parked cars in the bike lane, not to mention the incessant illegal honking, unsafe passing, and reckless driving.
As usual, the NYPD is nowhere to be seen.
car in the bike lane
5th ave and east 20th st, New york, NY
$387.89 in unpaid tickets. He seems to have a problem seeing fire hydrants, because he has a penchant for parking in front of them and then not paying the fine for 3 years.
Tow the bastard.
van on 5th
5th Ave and 21st st, New york, NY
On a an evening when scores of cops just a few blocks away were giving bicyclists bogus tickets (and driving their scooters in the bike lane), NYPD once again completely and utterly failed to enforce actual, real laws. Why? Because they were broken by people who were driving motor vehicles.
East 21st
east 21st and 2nd ave, New york, NY
Taking a cue from the cops at the nearby 13th Precinct (who never met an illegal parking spot they didn't like), this person sits in the bike lane on East 21st, idling away in front of a school yard. Ahhh, breathe in that asthma, cancer and heart disease kids!
Police Blockade
8th Avenue and 33rd Street, New york, NY
Either something was going on at MSG or the cops thought it would be fun to throw down a flash mob prank by surreptitiously blocking an entire 2+ block faces of the 8th Avenue bike lane at 1pm on a Friday. Note that the picture only shows the block between 33rd and 31st, but they filled up the block between 33rd and 34th and quite possibly further north. Bonus if you can spot the delivery truck parked in the bike lane down at 29th Street.
NYPD's Finest?????
8th Ave and 54th Street, New york, NY
I see this is the second time caught on camera for this cop illegally parking in the bike lane.
Where's the Emergency?
Eighth Avenue and 54th Street, New york, NY
No sign of any emergency to justify blocking the bike lane.
nypd van
2nd Avenue and East 7th St, New york, NY
I was walking home tonight when I noticed some police officers directing traffic at 2nd Avenue and East 7th St because the stoplight was out. Why they couldn't park their van in a parking spot instead of the bike lane is beyond me. They had plenty of room. God forbid "real" traffic be inconvenienced, but bicycle riders of course are not worthy of concern to them.
Oh, and of course the empty van was idling for no appreciable reason.
NYPD Violation
8th Avenue and 34th Street, New york, NY
This was a scary experience but it needs to be done!
Why should I have to be afraid of those paid to protect me?
Note - I treat all officers I encounter with equal respect and courtesy. Some genuinely want to serve the citizens of New York City and do their jobs properly - this means not breaking the law like these officers.
NYPD Patrol car
8th Avenue and 50th Street, New york, NY
This vehicle was parked illegally in a lane designated for bicycles on 8th Avenue in Manhattan.
The vehicle was empty.
Irony
8th Street and avenue c, New york, NY
Bitter irony - those I pay to protect me endangering my life.
More Fashion Barricades
Sixth Avenue and 41st, New york, NY
Some of the blocks with the bike lane barricaded were filled with cars, but others were empty, like this one. How much did Mercedes pay the city to put me in danger?
Mercedes & NYPD: A Fashionable Team
Sixth Avenue and 38th Street, New york, NY
I was heading up Sixth Avenue at about 38th Street when I saw laid out in front of me NYPD police barricades, as far as the eye could see. On the other side of the street were white movie production trailers. As headed uptown to Bryant Park, I found the source of the blockage: a giant tent with a sign that said "Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week." NYPD Cushmans were parked all over the place. At least four blocks of the bicycle lane were saccrificed to the convenience of the fashion moguls and their Mercedes sponsors!
Your Driving's OK, Your Parking Stinks
Park Drive and 62nd Street, New york, NY
This guy did have one of those removable revolving lights on top of his sedan, but he was no where to be seen. There is a big parking lot to the right of the scene shown (next to hecksher playground), where all the Parks Dep't vehicles park. He could have parked there, but he was too lazy. So he parked in the bike lane, forcing bicyclists and others into traffic. The NYPD passes by without doing anything.
Breaking One Law to Enforce Another?
West 77th Street and West End Avenue, New york, NY
Here we find the cops camped out in a bike lane, waiting for red-light runners. I'm ambivalennt because I'd like to see the red light laws enforced, and they are routinely violated on this stretch of West End Avenue. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNvWZWgQ2_4 .
But it seems to me there must be some way of doing this without blocking the bike lane. Plus, there was a commercial vehicle parked in the bike lane behind the cops (and behind me when I took this shot), no doubt emboldened by the example set by New York's Finest.
Cops Having Their coffee in the Bicycle Lane
Central Park West and West 87th Street, New york, NY
Didn't have the nerve or time this morning to engage these cops over their decision to inconvenience and endangder bicyclists by drinking their coffee in the bicycle lane.
NYPD Traffic Parked in the Bicycle Lane
Eighth Avenue and West 42nd Street, New york, NY
The cop directing traffic at 42nd and 8th Avenue found this convenient spot to park--the bicycle lane. And that's not a glare problem--this van had no plates, front or back.
NYPD enforcing the law!
Lafayette St and Prince St, New york, NY
Yesterday morning, I made it almost my entire commute w/out seeing anyone parked in the bike lane. Just as I was realizing this, I come across this livery driver camped out in the lane w/ his hazards on. As I was snapping my picture, an NYPD cop on foot, walked over and chased the guy off. Awesome!
NYPD parked in the bike lane
Lafayette St and Houston St, New york, NY
Not in his car. Christmas shopping?
Cops Keeping Bike Lane Safe for Commercial Vehicles
West 77th Street at Central Park West, New york, NY
This morning, I found these two cops parked in the bike lane, one reading the paper, the other doing official-looking paperwork, while two commercial vehicles parked behind them in the bike lane. I parked my bike and went over to speak to one of them. I was extremely polite with him and he was extremly testy and sarcastic toward me. He told me that given that there is a single lane for motor vehicle traffic in each direction of 77th Street, that commercial vehicles have a choice between parking in the traffic lane and parking in the bike lane, and the bike lane is the right choice for them. He added that he had specifically given permission to the van behind him to park in the bike lane.
In bike Lane With Cops Immediately Behind Her
West 77th Street at Central Park West, New york, NY
This woman parked in the bike lane right in front of two cops enjoying their donughts. See the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiA0Mw9yG3M
NYPD En Route to Work Across Bike Lane #2
Central Park Drive West at 87th Street, New york, NY
See description for prior post.
NYPD En Route to Work Across Bike Path #1
Central Park Drive West at West 87th Street, New york, NY
This appears to be an NYPD employee turning from Central Park Drive West across the bike path to access the bridle path westbound at ~87th Street. All the NYPD and Parks Dep't employees like to park on the southern portion of the bridle path (just across the 86th Street Transverse from the precinct). You can see this impromptu parking lot on the MyBikeLane map using the very cool satellite feature--just use full magnification and drag the screen to view.
Although the Transverse has an entrance to this impromptu "parking lot," the city employees prefer to cut across the bike path to use the bridle path entrance because that way they can cruise to work on Central Park Drive West where the HOV restriction has somewhat alleviated congestion. (Naturally, this guy was driving alone, in violation of the HOV restriction.) As this driver entered the bridle path, he came across two horseback riders and kindly "warned" them to get out of his way by honking at them (photo #2). Imagine paying $150 to rent a horse to ride on the bridle path and having some off-duty cop honk at you from their car!
New York's Finest in the Grand Street Bike Lane
Grand and Mercer, New york, NY
Despite the fact that the block was nearly empty, these two cops saw fit to sit parked in the BRAND NEW bike lane - next to an empty parking space - on Grand Street in SoHo.
Cop on Clinton for atleast 30 minutes
Clinton St. and Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn, NY
I took this photo on my way to take care of my sister's cat...and shot another photo upon returning at least 30 minutes later...
What was this cop doing for so long?
NYPD Emergency Services... on a donut run
2nd Avenue and East 11th St, New york, NY
Emergency Services : 5501 1 ESS
July 17, 2006. 8:27PM
166 2nd Avenue btw 10th and 11th St
The great thing about this is that the cops who parked this thing in the bike lane were buying donuts at the Dunkin Donuts nearby.
Lazy Cop
Tillary St. and Adams St., Brooklyn, NY
I made that perlious turn from Tillary to Admas street so I can get on the Manhaatan Bridge and I had to stop short because a car was camped out in the bike lane.
I asked to cop who sitting there to say something and she told me to do it! Is that my job or hers?
Cops parked on sidewalk
Smith St. and State St., Brooklyn, NY
Ok, so not a bikelane, but damn, parking on a sidewalk is even more retarded. And, cops of all people are always parkin' on the freakin' sidewalk at Smith & State. By their "broken window" theory, I should start crappin' on the sidewalk and doing drugs with old ladies or something.
