On a day when the smog was palpable, this guy was idling in the bike lane. Two laws broken in one irresponsible action.

This mother and daughter were doing a crossword puzzle in their car while they sat in the bike lane idling on this cold winter day. It probably would have been cheaper, and more fun, to find a parking space and do their crossword puzzle in Starbucks. Our civilization deserves to die.

More idlers sitting in the bike lane, spewing pounds of carbon into my face so that they can read in comfort. Plus $45 in unpaid tix.

This jaguar was parked, with no passengers, idling for at least 20 minutes, because I saw it coming and going on West 77th. The construction contractor has a permit to take the parking lane (Graciano Corporation, permits M022007008062, M022007011041, M022007011052, see http://a841-dotweb01.nyc.gov/permit/permit/web_permits/returnPermits.asp), and has done the right thing by posting "no parking" signs to prevent parking here. The signs were probably motivated more by Graciano's desire to enhance its own access to the site, not out of concern for the bike lane, but that's OK. Anyway, this idiot in the Jaguar just ignores the signs, ignores the bike lanes, ignores basic common sense and leaves the car idling here with no occupants.

This car, filled with bags of laundry, was left idling with no driver or passengers in the bike lane. Clean laundry, dirty air.

I told this guy he had to park elsewhere and stop idling, and he just looked up from the paper he was reading and laughed. Saw him coming and going, so he was idling at least 20 minutes. Under New York City law, trucks may not idle for more than 3 consecutive minutes, except (1) when the engine is powering a loading, unloading or processing device; or (2) when the vehicle is a legally authorized emergency vehicle. This guy was clearly violating the law, reading his paper, eating his breakfast, and keeping warm for 20 + minutes by idling the engine. Of course, he probably doesn't care if he is ticketed for idling, since he's already got $4,015 in unpaid tickets.

It was still pretty cold today, so every driver I encountered was sitting there burning gas and spewing fumes to keep themselves warm. I saw this guy while I was coming and going from my errand--idling at least 20 minutes in the bike lane.
