When you check the detail on his bike lane violations, you see that he parks for hours at a stretch in this spot and gets multiple tickets as each new TEA tour comes through. But none of the TEA have figutred out that they can ticket him for both bike lane and double parking at the same time.

DNA Contracting: A Congenital Defect?

West 78th Street and Broadway, New york, NY

This guy has got $2,265 in unpaid tickets, and he loves to park straddling the sidewalk and the bike lane. I've caught him here repeatedly (usually he's in his other truck: http://nyc.mybikelane.com/?plate=xc296s&state=NJ). I think his business must be named "DNA contracting" because he is genetically incapable of following the law.

Illegally Parked and Idling RCN Van

West 77th Street and Columbus Avenue, New york, NY

I told this guy he had to park elsewhere and stop idling, and he just looked up from the paper he was reading and laughed. Saw him coming and going, so he was idling at least 20 minutes. Under New York City law, trucks may not idle for more than 3 consecutive minutes, except (1) when the engine is powering a loading, unloading or processing device; or (2) when the vehicle is a legally authorized emergency vehicle. Penalties for violating the City idling law range from $250 to $875. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection
(NYCDEP) enforces this law. See: http://rudyard.oag.state.ny.us/environment/idling_trucks_buses.pdf

This guy was clearly violating the law, reading his paper, eating his breakfast, and keeping warm for 20 + minutes by idling the engine. Of course, he probably doesn't care if he is ticketed for idling, since he's already got $4,015 in unpaid tickets.

Your Driving's OK, Your Parking Stinks

Park Drive and 62nd Street, New york, NY

This guy did have one of those removable revolving lights on top of his sedan, but he was no where to be seen. There is a big parking lot to the right of the scene shown (next to hecksher playground), where all the Parks Dep't vehicles park. He could have parked there, but he was too lazy. So he parked in the bike lane, forcing bicyclists and others into traffic. The NYPD passes by without doing anything.

Repeat Offender Moves on Under Heavy Counseling

West 77th Street and Central Park West, New york, NY

This guy has $520 in parking tickets (http://nycserv.nyc.gov/NYCServInquiry/NYCSERVMain ), and that is after ~$100 in fines were written off by the Department of Finance. By his own admission, he parks here weekly, and I have caught him blocking this stretch of the bike lane before ( http://nyc.mybikelane.com/post/index/143 ). After a minutes or so of relatively intense counseling, he moves his van (not shown). Here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezmgwhcupZ8 .

Let's see if he remembers to keep the bike lane clear next week.

NJ Repeat Offender

West 78th Street and Broadway, New york, NY

Here's the same guy as in post http://nyc.mybikelane.com/post/index/181, in the same location and up to his old tricks: blocking both the sidewalk and the bike lane and creating an unsafe condition for everyone. He saw me taking the photo (inset, left) and came up to tell me I should "go to work" and stop bothering him. I patiently explained to him that he was forcing pdestrians and bicyclists into the street but he just kept yelling that I should "get to work" (inset, right). Just because you're "doing work" doesn't mean you have a license to do this, pal. I hope no one gets hurt, but if they do, hopefully they will find this post and will be able to use it to nail him (legally speaking) to the wall.

Something Fishy

West 77th Street and Columbus Avenue, New york, NY

This morning, I encountered a delivery guy bringing fish from his parked box truck into a restaurant on West 77th Street. Here he is parked in the bicycle lane. I asked him not to use the bicycle lane next time and pointed out to him how he could park on Columbus Avenue and be just as close to his delivery point. He said he would; let's see what happens.

Illegal Parking, New Jersey Style

West 78th Street and Broadway, New york, NJ

This guy is so selfish that he has to take up both the sidewalk and part of the bicycle lane with his van. As you can see from the picture on the right, he could have backed down the driveway, but for whatever reason he chose not to. As a result, this woman had to push the infant in a stroller out into traffic in order to make it down the street.

"Commercial" SUV in Showroom Condition

West 78th Street and West End Avenue, New york, NY

I expected to see the sticker on the windshield, this gas guzzler is so new. Maybe the owner just purchased it, but who would purchase an SUV with plastic bumpers for commercial purposes? More likely, it is not used for any commercial purpose and has been tagged as a commercial vehicle by the owner for tax purposes. If so, please get your tax dodge out of my bike lane!

Verizon Knows a Good Thing When He Sees It

Central Park West at West 85th Street, New york, NY

Here's a Verizon van that was parked right in front of the ups truck in the post below. Unlawful parkers observe a herd mentality, knowing that even if the cops do start ticketing, they will gain extra time while others are ticketed to return to their vehicle and escape punishment!

Cops Keeping Bike Lane Safe for Commercial Vehicles

West 77th Street at Central Park West, New york, NY

This morning, I found these two cops parked in the bike lane, one reading the paper, the other doing official-looking paperwork, while two commercial vehicles parked behind them in the bike lane. I parked my bike and went over to speak to one of them. I was extremely polite with him and he was extremly testy and sarcastic toward me. He told me that given that there is a single lane for motor vehicle traffic in each direction of 77th Street, that commercial vehicles have a choice between parking in the traffic lane and parking in the bike lane, and the bike lane is the right choice for them. He added that he had specifically given permission to the van behind him to park in the bike lane.
