Must have been a good story...ABC 7 had TWO trucks parked in the bike lane.
10 press vehicles in the "PROTECTED" lane - and more on the sidewalk! It was a MyBikeLane feeding frenzy!
OK, this is the last one I got pictures of - you can see the others in the video.

Wow. What can we do to highlight this?

I'm going to write to DOT to ask (1) that bollards be placed at each end of the block to restrict access (frangible bollards would be a good start - safer for bikes) and (2) some other parking be identified for press vehicles and other vehicles that often park in the lane.

Oh - and for the record, I found out what the story was.
It was the handing down of the first federal death sentence in NY State in 50 years to the guy who was convicted of executing two undercover police officers while they were conducting surveillance in Staten Island. Here's the NY1 story...since they didn't have a news truck parked in the bike lane!! : http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=68210

Sorry folks. It's the only parking around that lets the
news vans transmit their pictures back to the Empire State Building without an obstruction in front of them. The vans used to park inside Cadman Plaza Park until its recent renovation, and will probably be barred still once the park opens. And they can't park on Cadman Plaza in front of the courthouse as it's verboten by the feds.
Anywhere else nearby is too far for cable runs, or is otherwise impractical.
If you've got a good gripe write the New York Press Club, their offices are on West 42nd Street. Google them and find out more. They're good people.
It's much more constructive then this silly website.

#4. So since the feds won't allow parking in front of the Courthouse, and other options are supposedly "impractical", news vans "need" to park in a bike lane, endangering my life? So my safety is less important than your convenience?
Did you know that parking in a bike lane is also "verboten"? It's called New York City law.

I am pretty sure that despite the BS about doing their job, they are still *breaking* the law. Seems like some good press there. ABC 7 chooses to blatantly break the law and put cyclists at risk to get the scoop. See if we can get someone to pick that up.

Why can't they park outside the bike lane in the roadway?
Oh, that might endanger car drivers who are protected by 2 tons of metal...
