5th Ave is a tough street to bike down. The bike lane is packed w/ cars and potholes. I just take a lane and bike as fast as I can w/ the traffic due to the fact that the bike lane is essentially worthless due to all the obstructions.
That's the problem with the class II lanes. If the adjacent vehicular traffic is moderate or heavy and moving in excess of 15-20, then even one or two cars in the bike lane may trap you unless you time your lane-change to the traffic lane just right. In most cases, darting in and out of the bike lane is more dangerous than just traveling in the traffic lane.
