Mercedes & NYPD: A Fashionable Team

Observed by Scorpionix on Sat, Feb 03 2007

I was heading up Sixth Avenue at about 38th Street when I saw laid out in front of me NYPD police barricades, as far as the eye could see. On the other side of the street were white movie production trailers. As headed uptown to Bryant Park, I found the source of the blockage: a giant tent with a sign that said "Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week." NYPD Cushmans were parked all over the place. At least four blocks of the bicycle lane were saccrificed to the convenience of the fashion moguls and their Mercedes sponsors!

Absolutely ridiculous and offensive.

Also seems absolutely unnecessary. If you have to barricade the parking lane, why not put the barricades at the left edge of the leftmost traffic lane, instead of treating the bike lane as dead space? There's only one bike lane, but 5 traffic lanes!

Thank you, Steve! I suggest a group adventure up there to "realign" the barricades - and we'll get the benefit of a bike lane protected from the fashionistas!

I think all those cops Scorpionix told us about might object, IanD. Are these barricades really up and blocking the bike lane for a whole MONTH, as the sign suggests? It's a fasion WEEK, not a fashion MONTH. What gives?!

Hey, I'm all in for the great barricade movement!

The NYPD is paid to protect us, not endanger our lives.

I'm doing a little expose video piece on the violations outside the police station on Avenue C soon.

Be careful ... the NYPD has known to overreact to people video taping them in the past. Would hate to see you get hurt or arrested by an overzealous cop.

Check out the coverage of fashion week in the NYT:

http://www.nytimes.com/pages/fashion/shows/index.html

It's interesting how sensitive the fashion industry is to the claims that it encourages anorexia and unhealthy body images. According to the Times, the too-skinny models were quickly "benched." How sensitive would the industry be to a claim that their Mercedes-sponsored fashion show promotes global warming via auto use and endangers bicyclists needlessly?

Probably not very sensitive. The global climate change would be a bigger issue to them than cyclist safety.

We need a roster of biking celebs who can front protests in this kind of situation--kind of like Bob Barker for the anti-fur movement!
