Ford - Repeat offender, aggresive and dangerous

Observed by RatherBeBiking on Thu, Feb 01 2007

This vehicle was parked illegally in a lane designated for bicycles on 9th Street near Avenue A in Manhattan.

When the driver was very politely informed that he was blocking the bike lane, he explained that he did not care and there was no talking to him. As I left, I explained that I would alert the police as he suggested. I snapped a picture of his rear license plate.

He began to threaten me from his vehicle, and I noticed that his white lights (indication that the vehicle has been put in reverse) go on, and the vehicle began to move towards me a few inches.

He yelled "Be careful, I might accidentally back up and hit you!".

I responded that I had his plate and this would be a very unwise idea. I felt threatened enough to sprint down a block and found an auxiliary squad car (Vehicle # AP8 (?)). I informed the officers of what had happened and they told me that they would do a sweep of the block, and asked for a description of the vehicle.

BE CAREFUL OUT THERE! This driver is a REPEAT OFFENDER. I have witnessed his vehicle parked in the same bike lane numerous times. And after this, I know he is dangerous in more than one way.

You can see more updates on our website - lagca.com/dangerous/dangerous.html

License plate numbers of the vehicles in these images are kept on file for legal reference.

I notice he has handicap plates--any indication that a wheelchair user was driving or a passenger?

The driver was overweight and at least older than 60, don't know if his weight required a wheel chair though. I think I might have a clue as to who the driver was. I think his spouse may be the one who needs the wheel chair.

If there is anyone I would cut a break to on parking in the bike lane, it is someone is transporting a person in a wheelchairs by car. Mass transit sucks for wheelchair users and even double parking across the street from the bike lane would force the wheelchair user into the road or on a block or so long detour to the nearest intersction and back. None of that is to excuse this guy's threats.
