Access-a-Lane

Observed by BicyclesOnly on Tue, Jan 09 2007

Ah . . . back to school, back to the West 77th Street bike lane. This morning we found an access-a-ride van operator who improperly pulled into the bike lane to sit while the light was red. While the double-parking parents dropping off their kids at the school opposite the bike lane do make it necessary for through traffic to travel in the bike lane (they should not, but c'set la vie), the through traffic should not simply pull into the bike lane in order to sit for a red light, blocking the bicyclists. Instead, the through traffic should sit in the traffic lane behind the double-parked cars and cross over into the bike lane only when there are no bicyclists and they have the green so they can exit the bike lane expeditiously. Here's an example of the "right way" to do it, on this same block: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43954081@N00/315234532/
