This is now the 3rd bike lane closure on the new 21st st bike lane. The other two at least have big orange signs saying "lane closed" and stuff like that. Aren't they supposed to have a permit displayed to close a lane? A flag man? Cones and stuff?

I've ridden through here alot.. it's a nuisance, and dangerous, but I'm not sure what an alternative is.
What could possibly need that much protection? Those barriers should protect us, not a big metal cage or generator!
By the way, the 9th ave bike lane (sadly) from 23rd to 14th only, is AMAZING, it's really a step in the right direction. You have to go ride it.

On streets where there is no bike lane, these construction sotrage areas generally take only the parking lane. This area is occupying TWO lanes--the parking lane and the bike lane. I think you might get some traction with a complaint to the DoT on those grounds. Also, you can check to see if a permit was issued for this storage and get other details by searching here:

No Permits have been issued for this block. It's community board 105, 13th precinct. The building is 141 5th Ave; I saw a listing for a 4 million dollar apartment there. I guess I start calling...

Unfortunately it looks the following permits allow storage on the street in this location:
M022007242041 M022007242042 M022007262073
But I would still pursue a 311 complaint based on the apparently unnecessary blocking of the bike lane. From the picture it looks like all they needed is the traffic lane. There has to be some specified limit to the amount of space I can take spelled out somewhere , and I would guess that it is either 11' from curb or whatever the width of the parking lane is.

This has finally been half-rectified so that the barrier now only takes up half the lane; at least we have room to squeeze through. Still no orange "bike lane closed ahead" sign, though.
