Like all of the Guiliani-era lanes, the 5th Ave. lane is too narrow and the stripe is almost invisible. The city should re-stripe these with the biker decals and up to the new, wider standard. I have a few 311's in on some Upper East Side and Upper West Side bike lanes, it will be interesting to see what (if anything) is done. It's not a panacea, but I do think it helps a bit when the lane is newly striped.

This is especially true in certain areas in the fifties along the broadway bike lane - the lane is nearly erased in some spots.

In lighter news, much of 5th ave below 23rd is being repaved. This means that we will have shiny new stripes to swerve out of because of assholes parked in them!

Steve, they are repaving 5th ave from 21st? st down, maybe down to Washington Sq Park (although I haven't followed it the whole way). The DOT has said in the past that when they repave any road with a old substandard bike lane, that they will re-stripe it to be up to standard, like they did on 6th Ave.

We shall see.

They recently repaved the entire stretch of 5th along Central Park and it is a dream. Maybe they are planning to do the whole stretch down to Wash. Square.

Looks like a space on this guy's left, too lazy to park.
