This guy was rather annoyed by our complaint, but he could not deny that the risk he was imposing on us outweighed the convenience to him of standing in the bicycle lane illegally. Here's the video:

I love these videos. I have native YouTube working in the dev version of MyBikelane. I hope to launch it live soon so that your videos can be seen inline and on the same page.
I had a similar incident last night w/ a gentleman parked in the bike lane in Brooklyn Heights last night.
Me: "You can't park here"
Him: "I am not parked" (as he stands under both a bike lane sign AND a no standing at any time sign)
Me: "You can't stand here either. When people like you do this, you force cyclists out into traffic where they can be hit by cars"
long pause
Him: "I guess I never considered the implications of my actions."
another long pause as I tried to recover from the shock at his reaction
Me: "Well .... you should consider them. Thank you"
All in all went well, but I think it speaks somewhat to the truth. People really do not consider the implications of their actions when they park illegally. Enforcement is certainly important, but I think education could do a lot more to keeping these people out of the bike lane.

I'm with you on the education--if we don't do it no one else will. Most people hate to be proven to be in the wrong by a stranger. It's a pretty good deterrent, at least with non-commercial vehicles.
Here's an idea for dev version #2: "Adopt-a-lane". MyBikeLane bicycle commuters adopt a favorite lane they travel daily/near- daily try to keep it clear for a week, chronicling the results here . . .

Steve, I think you are single-handedly going to stop bike lane parking on the UWS! ;)

I'm tryin' though it would be great to have some company up here. Another idea for the site--Greg can pick a "Violation of the Week" that goes up at the top of the page, maybe gets posted on Streetsblog to attract traffic. We've got to mobilize all the cranky bikers!

Cool idea. I will add it to my list of possible feature enhancements. Been pretty busy lately on the new site, but still managing to get some small MyBikelane enhancements in at the same time. Hope to get back to more dedicated MyBikelane work in Jan.
