Liberated!

Observed by BicyclesOnly on Wed, Dec 13 2006

I have no idea if my calls and emails to the city and the construction contractors working here helped, but the bike lane at West 78th & West End Avenue has now been free and clear of construction materials for 3 days and so I officially declare it liberated (the biker decal was damaged by the steel plates stored on it, but c'est le guerre).

To demonstrate that I am not so parochial as to care only about dangers posed by illegally parked vehicles to bicycles, I noted that the placard on the dash of the Mercedes in the picture was issued to an "honorary police surgeon" and the car is parked right in front of a hydrant at 8:30 am: http://www.flickr.com/photos/43954081@N00/321551270/

Didn't Hippocrates tell us to "do no harm"?

This lane has remained free of construction materials for weeks now, following my 311 calls and complaints to Tucci and the other constuction compnaies involved. I don't know if it helped, but I sent the companies links to MyBikeLane posts showing their unnecessary blockage of the bike lane. Thanks Tucci, and thanks MyBikelane! See:

LFREEDMAN500 - You really have to much free time on your hands. Get a job and a life then you wont have so much time to think about problems with parked cars and bicycles.

Dear Troll -

Get a job and a life and then you wont have so much time to harass people you don't know on internet communities under a anon. username.

Mr. Anonymous, I have a well-paying, satisfying job, and a rich, enjoyable life. I use my bicycle almost everyday, to get to my job and to live my life. When people obstruct the bike lane unnecessarily, it wastes my time and puts me and my family (who also ride bicycles) in danger. So I do something about it, by telling them to move when I find them at the scene, and by posting their illegal and inconsiderate behavior here. I don't know why you think my life and job are inconsistent my my posting here.

Your view seems to be that if I "had a life" I would just accept people trampling all over my rights without doing anything about it, or I would spend all my money opting out of street traffic by taking taxis or black cars everywhere. I could make those choices, but I prefer to ride a bike and do what I can to make others respect my rights.

Your comments on this site reveal that you, Mr. Anonymous, have become accustomed to having people trample all over your rights, which has so disempowered you that you believe the only response available is to turn around and give it to the next guy. Some life! You've got my pity. Just stay out of the bike lane and keep your threats to yourself, or you'll also have my wrath.

Guys, don't let these trolls upset you too much. He is likely just trying to get a rise out of people.

I enabled anonymous commenting on the posts to encourage more discussion, but unfortunately that allows a slightly less cerebral crowd to post (they don't have to figure out how to register).

I think I will leave their comments up as proof of what sort of attitude we also experience on the road. I consider the anonymous poster's comments as more proof that their is a real problem w/ cyclist safety.
