Driver Needs Reminder to Look Before Entering Bike Lane

Observed by BicyclesOnly on Thu, Dec 07 2006

This driver nearly hit us as she pulled out of an underground parking garage and into the bike lane without looking to see if there were any bicyclists coming. Luckily I stopper her about two feet from hitting us. Here's the clip:

That wasn't even considered close. In a situation like that, I'd say the driver pulled out further to look for traffic then stopped when they saw the incoming bicyclist. It would be completely different had the driver pulled out right when you are infront of them.

Thumb_20

So you are suggesting that because the driver did not actually run the child legally biking down the bike lane over, that nothing was done wrong?

Such a car centric world!

It is apparent that the driver could have seen the oncoming traffic without actually entering the bike lane as she did, because there was about 20 feet of empty curb to her right. Perhaps she might have needed to lean forward in her seat to do so, but that does not seem like an unreasonable burden for her. I am wondering if you ever ride a bike in the city and if so if you ever bicycles with kids, Anonymous. It may broaden your perspective on things. I would agree with you one one thing, however--if the "driver pulled out right when you are infront of them," it would be "completely different"--it would have been attempted assault, not simply negligence.
